Laamiga celebrates International Women’s Day
Laamiga hosted a very successful International Women’s Day event in Islington on 19 March, with food, knitting and Mindfulness training.
Led by Laamiga main co-ordinator Dr Emua Ali, a group of women gathered in the Cally Resource Centre to celebrate International Women’s Day, while also giving Laamiga mentors and mentees the opportunity to get together informally, meet the committee and catch up on progress.
The highlight of the afternoon was an hour-long session on Mindfulness, presented by qualified teachers Carol Wilkins and Uz Afzal. The experts took the participants through a series of breathing, listening and tasting exercises to show how relaxing it is to be aware of our physical presence within our surroundings.
One of the attendees said afterwards:
“The Mindfulness training reminded me of how important it is to our health – physical and mental – to be mindful of the food we eat, the things we say and what’s happening around us.”
Another mentee was equally enthusiastic, adding:
“I learnt how to be positive and focused, and to have more self-awareness, self-responsibility and enthusiasm.”
The afternoon was rounded off with a sociable time spent talking, eating delicious home-made dishes (sweet and sour) and swapping tips on knitting courtesy of
Liz Baltesz, Judith Evans and Heather Chapman.
