Our Story

We are a “for women, led-by women” charity, that aims to act as a bridge between the needs of these women and satisfying work.

''Laamiga was set up in a Camden primary school in the early 2000s as a community project. The aim was to help migrant and refugee women navigate their way through the systems and processes towards integration within their local communities. The plan was to use local women (mentors) to meet up with the woman (mentee) they are supporting on a regular basis.

We realised many women were not reaching their full potential because they lacked access to appropriate resources, information and skills.

Initially the project was managed within the school community. Later on we wanted more local women to benefit from this project and we became a charity in 2011.

Through partnership, coaching and regular meetings with their mentor the mentees are able to set and achieve life goals for themselves and their families. This is turn reduces their isolation and enables them to play fuller roles in their children's schools, the local community and to find employment or to set up a business.

The mentees themselves then go on to mentor and champion other women informally and this has benefits for the whole  community.
